Nevada promotes Association member and past director of the Orvis place of education of Nursing, ju lie Johnson PhD RN was inducted into the prestigious American Academy of Nursing during the Academy's 30th annual meeting in Carlsbad, California, forward November 15, 2003.

The American Academy of Nursing inducted 82 novel fellows this year from across the nation. The 2003 nominees depict a variety of disciplines within the field of nursing. single in kind of the criterion for Academy membership is recognition by the agency of one's peers of having made outstanding contributions to nursing athwart and above those which are required in one's position of application Each nominee also must be sponsored for membership at two Academy fellows. This year's slate of nominees of exceptional nursing leaders are educators, researchers, entrepreneur and association executives. Dr Johnson was the individual Nevada nominee.

Before accepting a position this summer as the Dean of the sect of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr Johnson had serv as the director of Reno's Orvis teach of Nursing since 1993. Dr Johnson has a distinguished record in nursing education, research, and service, and has been characterized as a transformational leader and a highly esteemed member of the profession.



Dr Johnson's research casts modern light on health promotion and self-care activities in older rural adults. She is a national apt on the role of social support in driving ces- sation in this population. She is well published and has contributed invited chapters to textbook forward nursing leadership and nonpharmacological treatment of insomnia in older adults. In 1996, Dr Johnson was inducted as a comrade in the Western Academy of Nursing, and is a Sigma Theta Tau International Distinguished Lecturer She be subservient tos on the editorial board of the Journal of Community Health Nursing and the Journal of Rural Health and chairs Sigma Theta Tau International's Library Committee.

As co-chair of Nevada's Statewide Nursing Shortage Task Force, Dr Johnson l organized efforts to explain the state's critical nursing shortage. The efforts of Dr Johnson and others eventuateed in legislation directing the doubling of enrollment in Nevada's teachs of Nursing. Dr. Johnson received the Northern Nevada foments of Achievement Award for good quality in Nursing Leadership in 2002 and was recognized as a Woman of Achievement by way of the Nevada Women's Fund in 2003
