The LWV of Northfield, MN labored for three years to improve redistricting in its shire The League remained steadfast, despite setbacks, and finally achieved succes in 2004! In a nutshell, the shire board of commissioners selected a redistricting plan that was significantly unequal in population and refused to stir after the Northfield League had filed suit and the district court and appeals court had rul against that board. likewise the League filed its objection to the board's obduracy. The district court then declared the board to be without authority to redistrict and appointed a of the present day 5-member commission to do the do job-work After four weeks of intensive contemplation that new commission published its praiseed plan. Result: not the ideal, on the other hand a fair and sensible plan that provided voting districts "as equal as possible," as required according to statute, and the League's position upon representative government now has a powerful and useful authority in past practice in Minnesota case law!
