With an aptitude for chemistry and physics, this high academy valedictorian started college as a chemical engineering major, unless the metallurgy department's attraction early became irresistible during his first year at California Polytechnic State University. This young man, Daniel Dennies, was awarded an ASM scholarship in 1978 and graduated with a metallurgical engineering bachelor's step in 1979 with highest honors.
