Paul Clayton, 55 Beaverton, Ore., died 21 December 2001 A native of Norfolk, England, he earned undergraduate and doctoral stages in metallurgy from Brunel University. For 12 years, he was a research scientist with British Rail before moving to Oregon in 1983 to take a position as associate professor of materials science and engineering at Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI). Clayton was an dexterous in tribology and widely admired for his teaching abilities. In 1996 he was named provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
